  • Outdoor adventures in and around North Carolina?

Posted by admin on February 22nd, 2010 and filed under outdoor adventure | 2 Comments »

This summer I will be going on another road trip/ backpacking trip. So far I would like to visit Shenandoah National Park, to do some backpacking there and site seeing. Also I heard there are some emerald mines that look like they would be a fun experience. I am wondering what else would be nice to do in the area like any caving, whitewater rafting, climbing, waterfalls or other great sites to see. This can be in other states near North Carolina also.

If you want to visit cool towns in NC, go to Asheville. Do some backpacking/hiking on the Appalachian trail. It goes straight through there. Go white water rafting on the New River in West Virginia. If you pick a tour company, my preference is Class VI. If you do that, rock climbing is awesome in the New River Gorge. Also, if you’re over there, go to Seneca Rocks–one of the best places in the world to rock climb. While there, visit Dolly Sods for hiking and wilderness as well as the Cranberry Glades wilderness in WV. No crowds and one of the most beautiful places in the U.S. Another touristy thing there is to ride on the Cass scenic railraod.

Climb the highest mountain in NC, Mount Mitchell. One of the most beautiful parts of the AT is between NC and Roanoke area of Virginia. Climb to Also, you will be pretty close to the Smoky Mountains which has lots of waterfalls and wildlife (though can be crowded in summer).

If it were me, I would make a trip over to the Outer Banks–my favorite part of NC–you can go sea kayaking, surfing, beach hiking, and see tons of wildlife.

Sorry that’s kind of random but those are my suggestions off the top of my head :-) Have fun!
