Hi there! I´m thinking of going to Peru in November(want to do the Inca trail)I´ve been checking some available tours there and I would like to know if you would recommend those from GAP adventures????are they safe? and cheap compared to what you can get there?
    Thanks

Hi I’ve used Gap to go on safari in Kenya & Tanzania. They are more expensive than most companies, but have top notch safety standards etc.

What type of motorcycle for long rides, adventure, touring?

Posted by admin on December 29th, 2009 and filed under adventure tours | 3 Comments »

I’m looking to get back into motorcycling. A bit of background – I took training about 7 years ago and got my license. I rode a brand new SV650S – I’ve laid it down and did all that good stuff and rode for a few years. I’ve since stopped but want to pick it up over the next year or 2.

Now, to get back into it, I’ll probably be able to talk my friend into letting me cruise on his 125 Honda he has and if I’m lucky, his SV Gladious. Just need to refine my skills.

Now, the type of riding I’m hoping to do is long distance riding, touring, and twists as I am in Calgary and close to the mountains. However, high way riding will be on the list, hell, everything will be.

I’m looking for a bike that is comfortable for long hauls (SV650S wasn’t that swell for that) and has some juice in it and can take on heavy loads (luggage) for long trips. My days of riding super hard are over but I want the back up power.

My lead thoughts are directing me to a Suzuki Vstrom 1000 model. The sport Adventure. I’ve ridden a honda cbr 1100 xx before in terms of Sport Tourers but unsure on the comfort the tourers offer over the adventure styles.

My price range is 12,500ish, give or take, so BMW’s are out of the question. Like I say, I want a reliable bike that can get me from Calgary to London and boring roads or Calgary to California coast line on fun roads. I want it to handle the corners but be the most comfortable (ergonomically).

I don’t want a pure sport bike and I don’t want a cruiser style of motorcycle.
To go onto the first comment, any specific BMW models? I hadn’t given used a thought as I tend to buy everything new but I’ll consider it

    I too am still considering a Suzuki DL-1000 V-Strom.
Another forum where you will get a lot of answers is the Adventure Rider website. Be prepared to spend a lot of time on the site. Lots and lots of great information from a lot of great people.
    Good Luck
PS, another bike I want to look at is a Triumph Tiger.

Anyone come to Cambodia for adventure holidays?

Posted by admin on December 15th, 2009 and filed under adventure tours | 2 Comments »

Do you plan an adventure trip to Cambodia? Maybe with two or three friends? How about cruising along the coast, visit islands, sleeping on beaches and stuff like that for very little money? Or maybe running a tour business without a big investment for a few months? Contact me.

I went there in the Summer of 2006 to visit my mommy’s family. It was fun, but I wish it wasn’t so hot there.

Question for any marine recruititers or marines? How long are the tours in iraq?

Posted by admin on October 17th, 2009 and filed under adventure tours | 10 Comments »

i’ve heard that you go for 6 to 10 months then get to come home for another 30 days or something is this true. how exactly does this work from the moment you enlist to when your done. im bored out of my mind and i would love the adventure and the rush but i dont want to get stuck over there 3 or 4 years

To be honest with you, nothing really happens in Iraq anymore! It is as boring as fuck! If you want action/adventure try and get deployed to Afghanistan. As far as deployment lengths, most are around 7 months (depending on your MOS), but they can keep you longer if they want to.
    Here’s a break down-
You first enlist. Then, they do a background check. Next you are sent off to MEPs for a medical inspection. Then you are shipped to boot camp. 13 long and miserable Fridays later, you graduate. You then get 10-17 days of off time at home. Next, you go to either Infantry Training Battalion (ITB is only if you don’t enlist in a combat MOS, such as aviation maintenance) or you go to School of Infantry (if you enlist in a combat MOS you will go to school of infantry). Then you are shipped out to Fleet after graduating (ITB last 5 weeks and you are then sent to your MOS specialty school. School of Infantry last 8 weeks and you are then shipped to Fleet.)

Trust me, combat isn’t what most would expect. Yeah, the adrenaline rush is amazing, but you realize after how close you came to death. Don’t do infantry for a rush! Do it for your fellow Marines and for your country.

    Hope that helps!

I am starting a company that offers guided tours to little known yet interesting destinations. Will this fly?

I am a long term San Diego county resident and know all the cool spots, i.e. waterfalls, caves, old mines, even a turn of the century sawmill. I plan on charging 80 dollars for a 3 to 6 hr adventure and am hesitant about spending good money on a stupid idea. Looking for input, encouragement or whatever.

There are so many things to see in San Diego by tour that cost less than that. A family of 4 might find $320 a bit prohibitive to see a water fall, etc.

Business-wise, have you looked into liability if someone gets hurt? Liability waivers don’t cover you if the injury/loss can be attributed directly to you.

I spent 25 years in San Diego myself. Those old mines and caves are quite dangerous. Most of them are posted "No entry". Volcan Mountain used to be loaded with them.

I would feel robbed by someone who charged me $80 to show me a hole in the ground that I couldn’t safely explore.

I think most tourists that go to San Diego would prefer to see the things San Diego is famous for. Such as the Beach, the Zoo, the Old Globe, the Olympic Village, Julian, The Scripps, etc.

You are also limiting your possible clientele by going places that are not physically comfortable for many people.

I’m not saying it’s a stupid idea. I am playing "devil’s advocate", so you can see and perhaps find a way to overcome some of the drawbacks.

How to start an Ecotourism business?

Posted by admin on October 7th, 2009 and filed under adventure tours | 1 Comment »

any ideas where to start? do I need to find a deserted place where I can conduct adventure tours?

Start anywhere live or deserted place. Keep the term "Eco" in your tourism business. That’s what ever one seems to be doing. But these days innovation really makes the impression. Do something nobody has done before. Deserted place sounds cool. Go ahead do it. Make a tourism that will bring the Ecosystem back or create a new one. You business will live long.

There are people who make profit from 99% of ideas everybody knows, but there are people who will make 99% more profit from that 1% idea left!!

Ideas for Creating Eco tourism Business:
    1. Focus on Nature, Animals, Biology Terms yet providing tourism services.
    2. Deserted place will defiantly increase the profile but you will definitely need to add the "travel ingredients" to attract tourist to deserted place
    3. Become a member of the Eco-tourism Society. http://www.ecotourism.org/ learn some ideas there
    4. Get some help from friends, families and other ecotourism related companies. Often small ideas can get massive momentum’s with help from others.
    5. Learn about business also. You can’t run an ecotourism business empty stomach. This is a good resource for you http://www.score.org/business_tips.html
    6. If your location cap offer adventure tour, that would also be a good spot, since most trekkers look for such type of tour. But it’s all about marketing. But these days its all about marketing and considering the lowest chunk of people to motivate them to trek or tour. With a sound program you could have even the kids be part of your business. Don’t just concentrate for the big business. If I were you, perhaps I would try making my travel company the #1 EcoTourism Business in the world for all ages!!
    7. Do some reading here http://www.ustoa.com/
    8. Where to start ? Look for the place that interests you the most. You have to find a place that you love. Then everything will follow naturally. Get some help from local business councelling agencies, etc. Visit your so called the would be competitors, their webistes if they have one, and see what they are doing. Visit thier office and learn about them. The only thing you will need to know is what they are lacking!!!

I hope to see your business soon, do I get some discounts for a eco-tour??

    just joking there…
