  • Is 62 too old to seek this kind of adventure?

Posted by admin on September 29th, 2009 and filed under adventure trips | 28 Comments »

I fixed up a bicycle with a motor.Plan to take long trips and camp out most nights.Health is bad and will have to build up to it.Might die out there but I’ll die of boredom at home.

I would rather die in a tent than in front of a tv. But start with a couple short trips first….

Go to it. I’m older than you but I have to keep working to make ends meet and help the kids and grandkids. My big thrill is if I can get to Northern California before I die.

When the final moment comes you wil be able to say you did it your way (my apologies to Mr. Sinatra).

I am 71 and have every reason to believe that I will die at age 96 – in the ocean – probably trying to scuba dive.

We will go through this life just once.

      LETS HAVE SOME FUN.!!

That sounds like a good thing to do. My concern for myself is that my car will die before I do. I like your idea of being King of the Road. Good luck!

I don’t think there is anything a 62 year old can’t do if they put their mind to it. 60s is the new 40s, didn’t you hear that? I’m only 5 years from that and am already getting bored at home so I’m always trying to find something to liven up my life. That’s why I’m on here answering Qs and chatting. It liven’s things up just a little when there is nothing else to do.

Just a little bit younger here. I have been active all my life. I really believe that is one of the secrets of staying young. I have actually been thinking of buying a trial bike again as it was always good exercise and I loved gettin in the woods and exploring. Good for you. The trick is to keep doing something! And ya might as well do what makes ya happy!

      Good Luck!!

GO DO IT. Don’t live with regret. Be smart about it tho. There are plenty of places to ride and camp that will still give you some contact with humanity.

Buy a satellite phone so you can contact others no matter where you are and also let someone know when you hope to arrive at your new destination so if you don’t turn up they can turn out a search party.

Consider joining a bike club that does organised runs with a group, that way there is safety in numbers.

Finally, listen to your body. If the aches and pains are not normal, saddle up and head for civilization and a hospital.

You can still have your dream if your smart and do it wisely.

I applaud your sense of adventure. Take care of your health needs, then set out on your adventure. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, so don’t let your age become an obstacle in your mind. Age is just a number. You’re still young in my eyes (I’ll be 62 y/o on October 13th) so go for it. Just be sure to stay in touch with family/friends along the way & let them know your itinerary along the way also. I wish you all the best as you set out on your new adventure. Some your age or older, only wish they could do what you are about to set out & do. Be safe & have fun!

Maybe you should take friend with you on those trips, just in case you need some "assistance". A GPS and a cell phone may come in handy too. Be safe and enjoy.

Its your choice but couldn’t you start out on short trips and see how you manage. At the beginning don’t go that far, go prepared , also would it be possible to team up w/someone , for a more secure feeling. Go where the weather isn’t freezing at night.

Sounds like fun to me, 62 Gee you are young!
      Good Luck!

It’s early days yet, Ron. Give it a few years of wandering, and then see how you feel about it. I’ve been 40 for 32 years, and we have just sold the house and land, bought a fifth wheeler, and we’re joining the "gray nomads’ seeing as much of Australia as we can in the time left to us, however that much might be.
You’ve done your bit for your country – now it’s your turn.

Plan to take long trips and camp out in the Southwest with a buddy.
The climate’s good and a friend along will be great company and can dial 911 just in case. LOL.

      Have fun!

It’s not the fact that you are 62, it is you. What is home like. I’m guessing it is pretty gross if you are so keen to get out of it. But a bicycle is not the way to go. Long trips, long roads, you are a sitting duck to get struck and killed. That’s not the answer you need. Camping out by yourself can get very lonely, too. Catch a bus and go fishing for a week-end or even a couple of days mid-week. The romantic notion of camping out is all well and good, but carting all your necessary gear on a bicycle means loading up too much. Your motor will soon wear out under the weight. If your health is not up to it, nor are you.

Boredom is your only problem, I would think. Obviously you have a computer, get to a library two or three times a week to get some instruction. I should do that myself because I know bugger all about how to effectively operate my own.

And what’s wrong with building up a sex life at 62? E.d.? Use Viagra.
Magic stuff. You really should think of yourself as a horny old devil. I’m 68 and I still do. It’s great. Can you have a dog? Now that’s a mate you would relish to have. but make sure you allow him in the house. Of course he is going to widdle inside, but they soon learn. you will need to have a doggie door added to your back door to allow him out in the middle of the night, when he wants to go out. And in while you might be absent for some hours. A small dog with short hair is ideal.
Low maintenance. they give one a source of getting above oneself.
      Call him after my name.

You say that your health is bad, but you don’t say what the problem is. I’d say, go for it, but travel with someone. That’s good advice even if you’re in perfect health. Also carry a cell phone. Always be aware of your surroundings.Worst case scenario: you could have an accident or be attacked by someone on the road. There are predators out there. Be careful & have fun.

Go ahead with your plans and have fun. One thing is for sure, you will be glad that you tried the adventure. I do think it would be considerate of you to leave the people who love you a means of contacting you every now and then. Tell them a day you will call, the places you are heading towards, etc. If you were my relative I would appreciate knowing a little bit of information about the trips. Good luck.
