Ecotourism involves arranged tours to areas where tourism has had a minimal impact on the native flora and fauna. Thus the visitor can expect the environment to be as natural as possible, yet still comfortable. An ecotourist is interested in seeing birds, animals, fish, forests etc. that have been relatively untouched by humans. Adventure tourism focuses on activities such as white water rafting, zip-lining through rain forest canopies, ocean kayacking etc. Cultural tourism focuses on the cultural (language, customs, art, literature, architecture etc) aspects of a country, city etc.

The problems with ecotourism is there is no standard that hotels and resorts can go by – ultimately it is not in their interest to set up a comparable system that will help people choose other accommodation or national parks.
Some however are trying to get some standardizing and defining what ecotourism is like at http://safariguideafrica.com/green-safari-lodge-ecotourism-index.php. Here they have simplified the issue a little for implementation, but this is the only way I see something like this ever working.
